TRI-CITIES, Wash. – Next month, the roar of hydroplane racing will be heard again in a summer tradition that has become the heart of the Tri-Cities community.

The 2025 Apollo Gold Cup will mark the 60th time Unlimited Hydroplanes have raced on the Columbia River.

Originally starting as a small-town carnival at Sacajawea Park, the Water Follies evolved into a major event after local leaders were inspired by the World Championship Regatta in Lake Tahoe in 1965.

In 1966, the first Unlimited race took off with the help of Neil F. Lampson Cranes, marking the start of a powerful tradition.

The event has since grown into a world-class spectacle, drawing over 65,000 fans annually and generating more than $2.8 million in visitor spending.

The Tri-Cities International Air Show joined the Columbia Cup lineup in 1981, adding aerial excitement to the festivities. Originally held at the Tri-Cities Airport, the air show moved in 1995 to feature flying demonstrations over the Columbia River.

The success of the Tri-City Water Follies is credited to passionate volunteers, generous sponsors, and devoted race fans.
