KENNEWICK, Wash. – The Tri-Cities is gearing up for a major event as the annual Water Follies is set to draw in thousands of visitors. With an expected $2.8 million to be generated over the weekend, preparations are in full swing.

The event, which transforms Columbia Park into a hub for hydroplane racing, is anticipated to attract 70,000 attendees.

Hector Cruz, Vice President of Visit Tri-Cities, shared the significance of the event, emphasizing its role in introducing newcomers to the area. “This event can be the first time that someone experiences the Tri-Cities because of the boat races,” Cruz said. “Once they’re here, they’re enticed to come back.”

This year holds special significance as the community celebrates the 60-year anniversary of the Water Follies. Additionally, the prestigious Gold Cup will be featured, an important milestone in the world of motorsports.

Rylee Meyer, an event volunteer, expressed excitement about the Gold Cup’s history, stating, “The Gold Cup is pretty awesome to look at because it has all of the winners from years past engraved into it. And that goes all the way back to 1904.”

The event is a collaborative effort by the Tri-Cities community, with volunteers playing a crucial role in both setting up and cleaning up after the festivities. “It’s a true community event where the community comes together and makes it a grand spectacular for the Tri-Cities,” Cruz added.

For those interested in keeping up with the races, coverage will be available on SWX and NonStop Local starting tomorrow.
