TRI-CITIES, Wash. – National Police Week is being celebrated from May 11-17, 2025, as a time to honor law enforcement officers.

Cities and county leaders across the Mid-Columbia have signed proclamations declaring Thursday, May 15, 2025, as “Peace Officers Memorial Day“, in honor of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice or have been disabled in the line of duty.

Pasco Mayor Pete Serrano called upon all residents and civic organizations to participate in ceremonies commemorating the dedication of law enforcement officers, both past and present.

Ed Popp, Chair of the Benton County Board of Commissioners, acknowledged in a proclamation the bravery and dedication of officers both locally and nationwide.

According to the proclamation, approximately 50,000 assaults against law enforcement officers are reported across the United States, resulting in around 15,000 injuries.

Since the first recorded officer death in 1791, more than 19,000 law enforcement officers have been killed in the line of duty nationwide. This includes Deputy Sheriff Frank McGregor of Benton County, who tragically lost his life in a car accident in 1931, the proclamation said.

The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C., which was dedicated in 1991, bears the names of these devoted public servants.

National Police Week was first declared in 1963, and May 15 is designated as Peace Officers Memorial Day, during which flags are flown at half-staff to honor fallen officers and their families.
