BENTON/FRANKLIN COUNTIES, Wash. – Washington State Patrol troopers will be out in force during the Water Follies weekend from July 25 through July 27. The patrols will focus on speeding, impaired driving, aggressive driving, distracted driving and seat belt compliance.
WSP Aviation will assist ground troopers day and night. Motorcycle troopers and unmarked patrol cars will be used throughout Benton and Franklin counties to catch dangerous drivers.
The increase in patrols is due to the large number of spectators and traffic congestion around Columbia Park. Troopers will strictly enforce laws to prevent dangerous driving.
“Our primary goal is to prevent serious injury and fatality collisions, and reduce dangerous driving,” WSP emphasized. They advise arranging for a designated driver or using a taxi or ride service if needed.
Ben Franklin Transit will offer shuttle bus options with convenient pick-up and drop-off locations. Drivers should be prepared for heavy traffic and maintain safe speeds.
The main entrance to Columbia Park on SR-240 will be closed from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sat., July 26, and Sun., July 27. The off-ramp from westbound SR-240 to Edison Street will also be closed during these times. These closures aim to ensure a safe exit for vehicles and pedestrians.
Stopping on the shoulders of SR-240 for dropping off or picking up spectators, or for viewing races and air shows, will be prohibited.
