GREAT FALLS, Mont. – Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks wardens said they are looking for information about three elk that were shot and left to waste on the Sun River Wildlife Management Area near Augusta.
The elk were found on the morning of November 11 by a hunter on a property nearby, who notified wardens.
When wardens went to check out the scene, in the Shed Creek drainage on the south end of the Wildlife Management Area, they found a cow elk and two elk calves.
Wardens said the three elk had likely been shot a few days earlier.
“These Sun River elk represent a unique and historical migratory elk herd in Montana,” said FWP game warden Per Wolfisberg. “Shooting and deliberately wasting three of them is disrespectful to not only the animals, but also to the citizens and hunters of Montana. We are asking anyone who may have seen or heard anything unusual in that area to contact us and help us catch the people who committed this crime.”
The crime is still under investigation. The wardens asked anyone with information to call game warden Per Wolfisberg at (406)-781-0244 or to visit tipmont.mt.gov.
People who provide helpful information might be eligible to be rewarded with up to $1,000.
