RICHLAND, Wash. – The Richland School District Field Day, a track and field event exclusively for students with disabilities, is set to take place at Fran Rish Stadium on Thursday, May 22 at 9 a.m. This annual event has become a beloved tradition in the community.
Scott Piippo, the event’s organizer and creator, shared the event’s origins and its mission.
“We kind of took on a mission to create RSD Field Day in 2018,” he said. “Really just looking for creating opportunities for our students.”
The event started with 209 students in 2018 and has grown significantly. “Now this year we’re coming in over 500 students from 20 schools in the Richland School District,” Piippo stated.
The day promises to be filled with fun for all involved, with over 40 games, including lawn mower races, bubble blowers, switch activated Plinko, track and field events and much more.
The event has seen increasing community support and partnerships over the years.
“We’re going to have like eight or nine vendors, ranging all the way from people coming from across the region, like Shriners Children’s, and our title sponsor, Lamb Weston, for the fifth time,” Piippo added.
This event is open to everyone who wants to support their local students or grab some grub from Lamb Weston’s concessions trucks.
This support allows students to enjoy a memorable day.
