The Chalkboard Agency: Transforming classrooms through real stories

As the new school year gets underway, conversations about student mental health are more important than ever. One local organization is stepping in with a creative approach designed to help students feel seen, heard and connected.

The Chalkboard Agency, founded by educator Stu Cabe, is building what he calls a “story exchange”, a digital library of short, student-centered videos that teachers and schools can access on demand. Each video features a real student, educator or community member sharing an honest personal story about challenges, growth or belonging.

“What classrooms and students are really looking for is genuine, authentic connection,” Cabe said. “We’re using technology to capture their voices and help them feel a sense of belonging.”

The Chalkboard Agency allows people to log in, browse the collection and play a story that matches what their students need. Stories can be used as conversation starters, writing prompts, or simply a way to remind students they aren’t alone.

Cabe said this approach keeps things simple for teachers, while engaging kids. “We designed it so educators aren’t overwhelmed,” said Cabe. “These are quick, relatable stories that open the door for deeper discussions.”

The idea is already resonating with students in the region. Cabe recently visited West Valley Middle School in Yakima, where students asked to share their own stories after hearing him speak. “They feel engaged and empowered knowing their story could help other students around the county,” said Cabe.

Access to The Chalkboard Agency costs $4.99 a month for teachers with school-wide subscriptions also available.
