WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Tequila enthusiasts are gearing up for Tequila Fest at the Benton County Fairgrounds in Kennewick.
The event, starting May 16 at 6 p.m. for general admission ticketholders, offers a deep dive into the art of tequila, mezcal and more led by sommelier and organizer Christopher Chan.
Chan, also the executive director of the Washington Wine Guild, spoke about the event, describing it as a “walk-around, sip, sample and shop event.”
Attendees can taste tequilas, mezcal, sotols and pechuga, with a cerveza station also available.
Food bites will be provided by Dog Haus and other vendors.
Chan mentioned that there will be music and a performance by a Mexican dance group showcasing authentic cultural highlights from the state of Jalisco, a region known for its tequila production.
A VIP experience is available, allowing early entry at 5:00 p.m. Regular entry will be at 6:00 p.m.
Chan explained, “We have luxury pours. We’ve got tequilas. I mean, there’s some really amazing tequilas. Clase Azul. We’ve got Grand Centenario. We’ve got tequilas that are really expensive. And this is your chance to taste them.”
The event benefits the Washington Wine Guild, a 501(c)(3) educational nonprofit for the alcohol industry.
Chan also explained the differences between tequila and mezcal. He stated, “Mezcal is another agave distillate, but it’s made from a variety of different agaves. And most importantly, in everywhere but Jalisco.”
Jalisco, Mexico, is known as the capital of tequila production.
Mezcal is distinguished by its smoky flavor, derived from roasting agave piñas in earthen pits.
Tickets and more information are available at Washington Wine Guild’s website.
