Sunnyside settles lawsuit over crime-free rental housing program

SUNNYSIDE, Wash. – The Sunnyside City Council has settled a lawsuit with the State of Washington concerning the Crime-Free Rental Housing Program (CFRHP).

The city agreed to a Consent Decree, which includes a $1.1 million payment to the state from the city’s risk pool. This lawsuit, initiated in February 2020, was set for a jury trial in Yakima County Superior Court on January 12, 2026.

The CFRHP aimed to address crime and enhance safety in rental properties but was repealed in July 2025. Despite confidence in its legal stance, the council chose settlement to bring closure and move forward in 2026.
