KENNEWICK, Wash. – The Benton Conservation District is preparing for the annual Salmon Summit, a special event where local elementary students will release salmon into the Columbia River.
The event is scheduled for April 29 and 30, 2025, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at the east end of Columbia Park.
During the summit, approximately 3,200 students will learn about the salmon life cycle and their role in the ecosystem.
This event offers hands-on experience in environmental stewardship, with students raising and releasing salmon into the river.
To ensure the safety of the participating children, the City of Kennewick Parks and Recreation Department announced temporary closures.
The East Boat Launch and parts of Paul Parrish Drive will be closed from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., respectively, on both days. Alternative routes will be accessible.
For those interested in learning more, a livestream of the Salmon Summit 2025 will be available. This includes demonstrations by PNNL researchers on tagging juvenile salmon. The livestream sessions will occur from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. with ASL interpretation. Register here.
