Special investigation: Suspect in June SWAT situation in Outlook found dead

OUTLOOK, Wash. – The Yakima Valley Special Investigations Unit is continuing to investigate an officer-involved shooting that took place on June 28 in the 2600 block of Van Belle Road in Outlook.

According to the YVSIU, the incident began when a man identified as Petronilo Cervantes allegedly pointed a firearm at Yakima County Sheriff’s Deputies.

Deputy Wesley Graybael responded by firing one round from his department-issued rifle. Deputy Sergeant Justin Paganelli also fired a less-lethal round from his shotgun.

Cervantes then retreated into his home and barricaded himself inside. The Yakima Regional SWAT Team and Tri-Cities Regional SWAT Team were called to the scene to assist.

Despite their efforts to contact and locate Cervantes, he was not found until the following morning, June 29, when his body was discovered under the residence.

The cause of Cervantes’ death is still under investigation, as he was not struck by gunfire. The investigation remains ongoing.
