YAKIMA, Wash. — Shawn Boyle has been sworn in as Yakima’s newest police chief.

Chief Boyle has served as the interim chief since the summer, following former Chief Matt Murray’s retirement in May.

Boyle has been with the department since 1997, beginning his career as a corrections officer.

During a city council meeting, Chief Boyle requested trust from both council members and the community.

“I ask for your continued support as we grow as a department and work to address the crime issues by engaging in innovative ways and revisiting some traditional policing programs such as Block Watch,” Chief Boyle said.

Boyle also committed to forming partnerships aimed at improving quality of life and safety in the community.

Chief Boyle is the first YPD chief to rise through the Yakima ranks since Chief Don Blesio in 1996.

The council chambers were filled to capacity with supporters, including council members and Mayor Patricia Byers, who expressed their excitement for a new beginning in Yakima.
