YAKIMA, Wash. – Second Harvest’s mobile market made a stop in Yakima, offering fresh food to the community at no cost. Cars lined up around the block at Amigos de Altísimo for the event.
More than 200 people in Yakima received food during the mobile market. Each family got two bags of apples, one bag of onions, one bag of oranges, two bags of French fries, three loaves of bread, two packages of chicken, plus miscellaneous items Second Harvest would get from Walmart.
The mobile market, originating from Spokane, travels around the state distributing free food.
“We figured this would be another way that we can distribute the food that we get at our warehouses and give it out, and try to give it out to as many places as possible,” said Austin Suazo, Mobile Market Associate for Second Harvest.
Visitors to the mobile market can also pick up food for others.
“We allow others in line to bless their families and friends so that way, they don’t miss out,” said Suazo.
Volunteers play a crucial role in the success of the mobile market.
“If we don’t have any volunteers, these events literally can’t happen,” said Suazo. “We just try to try to work with the demand as best as we can and try to bring out as much food as we can and be able to do these events with success. And we’re just very thankful that we have people that are willing to give their time.”
The mobile market is scheduled to return to Yakima on Wednesday, February 25. For more information on upcoming events, visit Second Harvest’s Facebook page.
