An underwater science expedition has revealed an adorable, cartoon-like squid.
A Schmidt Ocean Institute science team spotted the quirky creature at 1,729 meters below the sea as they explored waters off the Argentinian coast.
The glass squid is notable because of its transparent body and tentacles on its head that look like wild hair.
Social media users have reacted to the cute creature.
One person amusingly compared it to Cameron Diaz’s iconic hair-raising moment in comedy classic “There’s Something About Mary”, while another commented: “You go queen, love your crown.”
Schmidt Ocean Institute explained the squid’s body density perfectly matches its environment, making it completely buoyant.
They said: “If you were a transparent squid — abundant throughout the global ocean — you could effortlessly drift over to your next meal or romantic connection.
“Their seemingly weightless bodies are filled with ammonium chloride, which is lighter than seawater, helping them to conserve energy while travelling.
“The technical name for this is neutral buoyancy, where an object won’t sink or rise and remains suspended in the water.”
