UPDATE: August 21, 2025 at 12:49 p.m.

While the cause of the fire at the Rotary Playground at McGuire Park has not been determined, arson is suspected, according to the Yakima Fire Department (YFD).

YFD also confirmed that no one was injured.

Crews remained on the scene for about an hour and a half due to risk of the bark rekindling.

YFD said this is the third time that the park has suffered a fire.

The Yakima Greenway, where the park is located, also put out a statement including details on how they plan to move forward and address vulnerabilities. They confirmed that the entire “Tot Lot” section of the playground was destroyed.

“We are committed to taking meaningful action within our control and advocating for broader, collaborative solutions behind it,” the Greenway Foundation said in a press release.

The foundation also listed advocacy priorities, which include stewardship, fire safety and long-term solutions for homelessness and mental health issues.

AKIMA, Wash. – The Yakima Fire Department(YFD) responded to a play structure on fire at McGuire Park on the greenway at around 5:08 a.m.

When firefighters arrived, they found the play structure “fully involved,” according to YFD on social media.

As of 6:17 a.m., crews remain at the park ensuring the fire is fully out.

YFD asked the public to drive safely while passing the scene on I-82.
