RICHLAND, Wash. – Richland High School senior Marjorie Bunch has been awarded the Congressional Award Gold Medal, a prestigious honor from the United States Congress, Richland School District announced.
The Congressional Award, established in 1979, challenges young Americans to set and achieve personal goals in voluntary public service, personal development, physical fitness and expedition/exploration.
To earn the Gold Medal, participants must complete 400 hours of service, 200 hours each in personal development and physical fitness and a five-day expedition. The process typically takes at least 24 months.
Marjorie began her journey in 2022, engaging in activities that reflect her commitment to community and growth, RSD said.
For voluntary public service, she volunteered with the Academy of Children’s Theatre and supported youth programs at YMCA Camp Reed in Spokane. She also served meals at the Tri-City Union Gospel Mission in Pasco.
In personal development, Marjorie completed a two-year confirmation process in the Catholic Church and participated in Mock Trial, advancing to the state competition.
Her physical fitness achievements include competing with Richland High’s swim and golf teams and reaching personal fitness goals.
For her expedition, Marjorie embarked on a five-day trip with a friend from Ireland, traveling over 600 miles through Seattle and Portland. They explored the Pacific Northwest by car, foot and public transit.
