Richland schools to revamp library oversight, cut nurse positions for 2025-26

RICHLAND, Wash. – Richland School District (RSD) has announced significant changes to its library and health services for the 2025–26 school year.

According to an RSD release, a new oversight model will be implemented for secondary school libraries starting next school year. A district-level certified librarian will oversee all six secondary school libraries to ensure consistent access to resources. Current secondary librarians will transition back to classroom teaching roles.

The libraries will remain open, staffed by trained paraprofessionals, with expanded hours from 6:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Elementary library services will not be impacted by this change.

In addition, RSD said it will reduce school nurse staffing by six positions, bringing staffing closer to pre-pandemic levels.

Despite this reduction, health rooms will be staffed by trained paraprofessionals, and certified school nurses will continue to provide specialized care.

“We are making strategic decisions that allow us to sustain strong, student-centered services while being thoughtful stewards of public funds,” Superintendent Dr. Shelley Redinger said in the release.
