Richland road construction aims to ease George Washington Way traffic

RICHLAND, Wash. – Drivers in Richland may have noticed increased traffic on George Washington Way.

The first phase of a major construction project has begun at one of the Tri-Cities’ busiest intersections. Project Manager Sheldon Williamson explained the improvements, saying, “This project is going to, add an extra, outbound lane, southbound lane going toward the freeways and an extra left turn lane from Columbia, Point Drive on to those, exit lanes to the freeways.”

The construction aims to manage the flow of approximately 40,000 cars that pass through the intersection daily. The improvements also include expanding cement walkways for pedestrians.

Williamson emphasized the goal, stating, “The whole intersection should flow better then. That’s the intent.”

The project commenced this week and is scheduled to continue until late November. Funding for the work is provided by a federal grant.

Williamson advised drivers to remain patient during construction, assuring that the long-term benefits will be worthwhile.

For updates and details on traffic configurations, visit the city’s website.

Williamson noted, “We will be updating that as phases of the project change and different traffic, configurations maybe need to happen.” The construction is designed to avoid any full closures of the intersection during peak hours.
