Richland Richland residents recount recent flooding

RICHLAND, Wash. – Residents of Richland and West Richland found themselves dealing with unexpected floodwaters last week. The flooding left neighborhoods covered in debris and prompted a community-wide cleanup effort.

Initially thought to be manageable, conditions quickly turned into widespread flooding within hours. Neighbors worked together to move animals, equipment and belongings to safety before the water levels rose further.

“And then, within probably 7 or 8 hours, the whole entire property was submerged under water. So and then by the time it was done, which is probably eight the next morning or so, it was up to the patio. So they had about four more inches for the house,” said Colt Ward, a Richland resident.

The floodwaters came dangerously close to entering homes but stopped just inches short, sparing residents from interior damage. However, they left behind heavy debris carried by the currents. Logs, garbage and large items were piled against fences and properties, leaving homeowners to tackle much of the cleanup.

Despite the challenges, the flooding brought the community together.

“That is what it is. You know, growing up in a small town, people helped each other out. And that’s exactly what we saw out here. And it was really awesome to see for sure,” said Mike Bingeman, another resident.

Amidst the chaos, one neighbor found a silver lining when a salmon washed up onto his property.

Residents continue to prepare for potential future flooding while reflecting on the strength of their community.
