Richland preps for Winter Wonderland 2025’s kick-off celebration

What’s become a Christmas tradition in the Tri-Cities preps for another successful kickoff.

Richland’s Winter Wonderland, primarily at John Dam Plaza but including satellite events at the Richland Community Center and Howard Amon Park, is set for 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5.

From a lighted parade, a count-down complete with a fireworks display, an appearance from Santa Claus and his elves and a tour through Richland’s history, the event is for all of Tri-Citians, young and old, eager to get into the Christmas Spirit.

Richland Parks & Recreation Director Chris Waite says that Santa is even taking some time out on his busy trip to John Dam Plaza to read letters, and that a drop box will be available at the entrance of the Alphabet House Village.

That village is a call-back to the beginning of Richland: when the U.S. government was rushing towards completion of the Manhattan Project, moving folks from all over the country to Eastern Washington, it needed to build hundreds of brand-new homes.

To streamline the logistics of the operation, the building team opted for a simple “A-Home; B-Home” format, on display at John Dam Plaza along with plaques with historical information and all the lights your Christmas-ready heart desires.
