RICHLAND, Wash. – The Richland Police Department arrested a woman Wednesday morning after they received a call of someone pointing a gun towards buildings.

Around 11:00 a.m., Richland Police responded to the incident, spending nearly 40 minutes communicating with the woman. In that time, the woman had made her way to a brush field near state route 240. Officers established communications and used a drone before eventually leading her out and taking her to a nearby ambulance.

The suspect was located in the area of Columbia Center Blvd. and Fowler St. near State Route 240. According to the Richland Police Department, the gun was actually an airsoft gun.

Commander Christopher Mason with the Richland Police Department said there were no injuries, and thanks the readiness of officers during the encounter.

“Any time there’s somebody supposedly carrying a firearm, there’s concern for our community,” said Commander Mason. “We’re very fortunate that we have, the assistance from Benton County, Pasco, Kennewick and other agencies.”

As of noon Wednesday, the Richland Police Department says the area is safe with the suspect in custody. Commander Mason apologizes for any commuting issues but reiterates that time is needed in these sorts of situations.

“Public safety is obviously a great concern to us. All of our officers are crisis intervention trained,” said Commander Mason. “It takes patience to ensure a peaceful resolution such as this. So, we are not in a hurry as long as we can ensure their safety.”

This investigation is still ongoing.
