
RICHLAND, Wash. – With ballots rolling out, it’s time to focus on some standout election races in Richland and the surrounding areas.
In Richland, a local measure could significantly change the city council elections. The proposal would create seven districts within the city. City Council seats one through five would be elected by district, while seats six and seven would be elected at large.
In West Richland, the mayoral race features incumbent Mayor May Hays facing off against Fred Brink.
Another mayoral race is unfolding in Mabton, where Martha Gonzalez is challenging incumbent Mayor Rachel Ruelas.
Yakima is seeing competition for the coroner seat, with current Chief Deputy Coroner Marshall Slight running against funeral home general manager Dan Williams.
Several levy votes are also on the ballot.
The city of Yakima is asking voters to authorize $6 million for the city’s 2026 budget.
Franklin County Fire District 1 is proposing an increase in their levy from 39 cents to 85 cents per $1,000 of assessed property value, which would cost an average extra $10 to $20 per month.
The Kiona-Benton School District is requesting a levy to preserve various programs, including STEM classes, sports and music.
