Richland business owners prepare for downtown loop changes

RICHLAND, Wash. – Major changes are coming to Richland’s downtown as George Washington Way and Jadwin Avenue are set to become one-way streets by the end of 2027.

Business owners in the area are preparing for the impact of these changes. Megan Savely, owner of Frost Me Sweet, expressed her initial concerns about the construction. “Our initial thoughts were pretty scared. Any sort of construction that’s shutting down the streets around us is always a little scary,” she said.

Despite the worries, Savely remains optimistic about the community’s support. “We’re just being really optimistic that Richland residents will still find their way down here with whatever streets they can and visit us,” she added.

According to the City of Richland’s Downtown Loop website, the street modifications aim to improve traffic flow, enhance walkability, and increase bicycle access. The changes will also add on-street parking, a much-needed improvement according to local business owners. “I think everyone agrees the parkway could use more parking,” Savely stated.

Savely is enthusiastic about the growth in the Tri-Cities area despite the challenges. “I think as the Tri-Cities grows, this is just what’s going to happen. Things are going to change and we just have to be able to roll with it. I do think it’s going to be great,” she said. “We’re optimistic that it’s going to be awesome. Yeah, just getting through it’s going to be the tough part.”

The Downtown Loop website indicates that the final design is expected to be unveiled by the end of the year. Readers interested in more information can visit the City of Richland’s Downtown Loop website for updates on the project.
