RICHLAND, Wash. – The Lower Columbia Basin Audubon Society is inviting bird enthusiasts to join their monthly bird-watching event at Bateman Island.
The event occurs on the first Saturday of each month, with the upcoming one scheduled for this Saturday. Participants will gather at 7:45 a.m., with the walk beginning at 8:00 a.m. and concluding at 11:00 a.m.
Lori recommended attending a bird walk to learn from experienced birders.
She also suggested beginners start by observing birds in their backyards and investing in a pair of binoculars.
“They don’t have to be super expensive, but they really will help you see the details that you need to see to start identifying birds,” she said.
Lori emphasized the importance of being a responsible birder by paying attention to how birds respond to human presence.
“If they seem nervous, if they are paying attention to you, you probably are too close,” she said.
She also advised caution during the breeding season to avoid disturbing nesting birds, as human attention can increase the risk of predation.
The Lower Columbia Basin Audubon Society’s bird walks offer a valuable opportunity for both novice and experienced birders to connect with nature and learn more about local bird species.
