President Trump says he’ll halt funding for ‘sanctuary states’ effective February 1

President Trump said that the federal government would stop issuing payments to so-called “sanctuary cities” and the states they’re within beginning February 1.

This would include Washington state and Oregon, which are both highlighted as sanctuary jurisdictions on the Department of Justice website.

Trump has attempted to cut funding to Democratic states several times during his second term, many such halted by federal judges as recently as December. The new move is expected to face similar legal challenges.

The scope of the funding cuts was not made immediately clear, including whether programs such as SNAP and Medicaid would be affected.
