Pet adoption event at Richland bookstore finds homes for small animals

RICHLAND, Wash. – Little Lives Small Animal Rescue joined forces with Adventures Underground Bookstore to host a unique adoption event. Visitors could purchase a book and possibly leave with a new small animal companion.

The event marked the first adoption opportunity the rescue has organized in over two years. Natalie Vazquez-Lopez, co-executive director of the rescue, explained the organization’s mission.

“They’re overlooked, right? You have dog rescues. You have cat rescues. There’s not really a place for animals like this to go,” Vazquez-Lopez said.

The event featured a variety of animals including guinea pigs, bearded dragons, rabbits, tortoises, snakes, and budgies. Vazquez-Lopez shared her passion for these small creatures and the importance of finding them homes.

“We take small animal breeds like reptiles, rodents as well. And right now, we have some rabbits. We’ve got guinea pigs, we’ve got some tortoises that just came in, a few snakes and some budgies,” she stated.

Vazquez-Lopez emphasized the benefits of fostering animals to see if they fit into one’s lifestyle.

“Companionship. A lot of our adoptive parents actually have children that they like to teach to care for other animals. So animals like this that require special care are really helpful for that, because you can keep them in somewhat of a confined space, let them roam the house and teach your children about them,” she said.

Vazquez-Lopez plans to hold similar events monthly. For more information on adopting one of these little creatures, visit their website.
