PASCO, Wash. – The City of Pasco has officially proclaimed May 2025 as “Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month”.

The announcement during the council’s May 5 meeting was made to honor the contributions and achievements of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) in the community.

Mayor Serrano read and presented the declaration to Pasco AAPI residents.

“As we celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we acknowledge the hard work and perseverance of AAPI individuals who have enriched our community,” said Mayor Serrano. “Their achievements make our society more vibrant and prosperous.”

Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month has been observed since 1992, evolving from the initial Asian Pacific Heritage Week celebrated in 1979.

The month of May was chosen to commemorate significant historical events, including the immigration of Nakahama Manjiro in 1843 and the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad in 1869, built with the labor of nearly 20,000 Chinese immigrants.

The theme for 2025, “A Legacy of Leadership and Resilience,” honors AAPI leaders who have laid a foundation for future generations to thrive and adapt to change.
