PASCO, Wash. – As daylight saving time ends, officials urge residents to check their smoke alarms.
The Pasco Fire Department recommends testing smoke alarms twice a year, once in the spring and again in the fall.
Deputy Fire Chief Chris Mortensen emphasized the importance of smoke alarms in preventing harm during emergencies.
“Smoke alarms are one of the biggest factors in being alerted if you do have a house fire. We want to make sure they’re working properly and placed strategically throughout the home so everyone has a chance to get out,” said Mortensen.
While newer smoke alarm models have long-lasting lithium batteries, many older ones need replacement every ten years.
The department partners with the Red Cross to offer new smoke alarms to those in need.
Residents can also receive assistance from fire crews for installing or maintaining their alarms.
