WALLA WALLA, Wash. — July is National Parks and Recreation Month, and what better place to celebrate than beautiful Walla Walla.
Joining the morning show was Andy Coleman, current Director and almost 30-year employee of Walla Walla Parks and Recreation.
Coleman talked about the day-to-day of working in Parks and Rec, how and why he got into the sector, and even some of his favorite spots: about Pioneer Park, Coleman said, “It has some very mature trees. It also includes an aviary, which is very unique for a city to have an aviary,” he said.
Another is Fort Walla Walla Park. Coleman described it as, “a great natural area out there with trails, and you feel like you’re out in the middle of the woods, but you’re right in the city.”
The goal of the Parks and Rec Department, according to Coleman, is to “create community, get people outside, let them enjoy nature.” He emphasized that while not everyone can visit national or state parks, local parks provide accessible and free recreational opportunities.
Walla Walla Parks and Recreation Department is preparing to take back operations of the Veterans Memorial Golf Course, a city-owned facility since 1948. The city managed it for 47 years before contracting it out for the past 30 years.
