KENNEWICK, Wash. – The Tri-Cities Disc Golf Club is a nonprofit offering weekly disc golf events and seasonal tournaments.
Scott Sain, Club President of TC Disc Golf Club said club members often help out with course maintenance as well. “Every dime that goes into our club goes back out into the community, to the course and to the tournaments to make it fun for everybody.”
Disc golf has a lot of similarities to what disc golfers call “ball golf”. Even terms like putting, driving and ace are common practice.
“Its all scored the same, you got pars, you got birdies, bogies,” said Sain. He attributes disc golf as being one of the most accessible sports to play. “Once you have a disc in your hand you never have to buy it again unless you lose it,” said Sain. “You don’t even have to pay to play.”
Tyler Porter, longtime member of the TC Disc Golf Club, learned how to throw when he was just 5 years old. “The first club interaction I had I was just out here playing around by myself,” said Porter. It was a group of club members who convinced him to play in a Winter Series tournament the following weekend, even covering his cost of entry.
“I’ve met a lot of new people, this is my family,” said Porter. Porter shared a story of his sons journey with Epilepsy. “Scott ran a fundraiser for us to help us with funds to go to Seattle for appointments.” Porter said it is that generosity that makes the club what it is today.
Sadie Shattuck, Disc Golf Club Treasurer, said disc golf is a way for her to scratch a competitive itch. “I was missing that a lot transitioning out of high school and college and having a way to express that,” said Shattuck. “Disc golf gives you that opportunity.” She found the sport during COVID, learning to throw the disc with her boyfriend.
Shattuck said disc golf is perfect for any age or capability. Whether you are using disc golf as a cardio exercise running after every disc, or using it as a social activity and a way to catch up with friends. “It’s really whatever you want out of it,” said Shattuck.
Sain said the best way to get involved with the sport is to find a spot to throw. “You’ll meet people down here,” said Sain. “Just come down and try it out.”
