YAKIMA, Wash. – Crews with West Valley Fire-Rescue responded to a kitchen fire in a Yakima home this afternoon.
The fire started when hot oil on the stove ignited due to material left too close to the burner, a release said.
The fire extended into the wall and ceiling, causing significant damage.
A woman was taken to the hospital after sustaining burns while attempting to extinguish the fire with water, the release added.
Officials advised that in the event of a stovetop fire, it’s crucial to turn off the burner and cover the pan with a lid.
They emphasized never using water on a grease fire along with having a charged fire extinguisher nearby.
