KENNEWICK, Wash. – A strong call for a new aquatic center echoed through Kennewick City Hall during the public comment period of the city council’s regular meeting on July 1.
Community members highlighted the inadequacy of the city’s single operational pool, Kenneth Serier Memorial Pool, noting that Kennewick, with a population of 83,000, deserves more than one aging facility.
One local parent and swim instructor voiced her frustration, comparing Kennewick’s facilities to those in smaller cities like Bothell, which has multiple pools for its 48,000 residents. “One pool for families, one for learning, and one for exercise is not too much to ask,” she said.
A former coach encouraged the council to consider a larger aquatic center that could attract competitive events and boost local tourism. He cited the King County Aquatic Center’s success in generating hotel stays through events. “If we’re going to do it, let’s do it big and do it right,” he added.
Students stood before the council and emphasized the importance of swimming for health and well-being. “Swimming is the one sport my body can handle,” one student shared, highlighting the need for accessible facilities for those with health challenges.
A $47 million aquatics facility is in the works in the city of Pasco.
The city is hoping to open the facility in the Broadmoor area on Memorial Day 2026.
