KENNEWICK, Wash. – The Kennewick Fire Department is preparing for a leadership change with Michael Heffner set to take over as the new fire chief beginning October 16th.

Heffner, who has dedicated nearly 30 years to fighting fires, expressed his commitment to the community. “We want to meet the needs of our community. They’re the reason we do what we do,” Heffner said.

Reflecting on his career, Heffner described becoming fire chief as a significant milestone. “As a young firefighter, I always thought that the fire chief would be that, you know, that, that the pinnacle of the career,” he said.

Heffner acknowledged the weight of his new role. “Looking back in the rearview mirror, nearly three decades realize, I finally get that opportunity. And it’s a humbling experience, but also a huge responsibility,” he said.

In his five years with the Kennewick Fire Department, Heffner has emphasized the importance of focusing on people, policies and budgeting. He stated, “Really taking care of the organization at the high level and working behind the scenes to support all the work our firefighters do.”

As he transitions into his new role, Heffner plans to address staffing issues and maintain open communication with the community. “We’re always excited to get feedback on how we’re doing. Both positive, and occasionally we get some feedback that we need to make some adjustments,” he said.

Heffner described his move as a full circle moment, as his father was from the Tri-Cities. He feels as though he’s returning to a second home.
