OLYMPIA, Wash. – A new bill proposed by Kennewick Senator Matt Boehnke strives to alleviate financial burdens and encourage more students to complete their education.

Senate Bill 5542 would amend existing Washington state law to expand tuition waivers at community and technical colleges by removing the age restriction of nineteen for high school completion programs.

The bill maintains full tuition waivers for children and surviving spouses of law enforcement officers, firefighters, and Washington state patrol officers who lost their lives or became totally disabled in the line of duty.

The State Board for Community and Technical Colleges will oversee the implementation and report on the annual costs of these waivers to the legislature.

The bill was heard by the Senate Committee on Higher Education & Workforce Development February 10 and moved to the Rules Committee for further discussion and consideration.
