KENNEWICK, Wash. – The Kennewick School District (KSD) announced Dr. James West, assistant principal at Cascade Elementary, has been recognized as the Washington State 2025 Elementary Assistant Principal of the Year by the Association of Washington School Principals.

The district said the award reflects West’s exceptional leadership, commitment to student success and dedication to fostering a positive school culture.

“I’m incredibly honored to be named Washington State’s Elementary Assistant Principal of the Year,” West said. “This recognition is a testament to the dedication of Cascade’s amazing teachers, staff, students, and families who make our school a true community of learners. I’m grateful to be part of the Kennewick School District and Cascade Elementary, where we are committed to engaging students and preparing them for future success.”

West has played a role in making Cascade Elementary into a welcoming and student-centered learning environment. KSD said West’s leadership has driven key initiatives, including enhancing schoolwide safety, improving student attendance and implementing a Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports program.

KSD said one of West’s most impactful contributions has been his leadership in organizing ‘Wellness Night.’ It’s an annual event that brings over 50 community partners together to provide essential resources for students and families.

“Dr. West is more than deserving of this honor. He puts students first, builds meaningful connections with families, and continuously strives to make our school a better place for all,” Principal Dr. Julie Nelson said.
