KENNEWICK, Wash. – The Kennewick Police Department is urging residents to follow fire safety tips after a residential fire occurred on March 23, near West 12th Avenue and South Yelm Pl.

Officers safely evacuated residents while the Kennewick Fire Department extinguished the blaze. The incident was caused by unattended barbecue coals that were not fully extinguished, which toppled over due to high winds.

As BBQ season begins, it’s crucial to grill safely. Officials advise, “Grill in a safe area—at least 10 feet away from buildings, dry grass, and overhanging trees.” They also stressed the importance of never leaving grills unattended, keeping a fire extinguisher nearby, and checking wind direction.

Residents are reminded to dispose of coals properly in a metal container and to obey any local burn bans due to high fire danger.

Staying vigilant with these safety measures can help prevent accidental fires. Enjoy your BBQ responsibly!
