OLYMPIA, Wash. – A bill co-sponsored by Sen. Matt Boehnke (R-Kennewick) that expands access to the College Bound Scholarship program was signed into law today.
The program covers tuition and fees at Washington’s public colleges and offers a book stipend.
Senate Bill 5543 ensures automatic enrollment for eligible students, simplifying the process and removing bureaucratic hurdles.
“This bill is about breaking down barriers—period,” Boehnke said in a release. “Every eligible student will be automatically enrolled in the College Bound Scholarship program. That’s what good government looks like—smart, effective, and focused on real outcomes.”
The law aligns with the Washington College Grant, providing a stronger safety net for low-income students. Students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch are automatically enrolled, with added support for foster youth between 14 and 18.
“This isn’t just a bill—it’s a promise to every seventh grader in Washington,” Boehnke added. “We’re investing in the next generation of nurses, teachers, technicians, and entrepreneurs.”
SB 5543 takes effect on July 27, 2025, in time for the next academic cycle.
