KENNEWICK, Wash. – A local football coach and his wife were recognized by Kennewick Police Department (KPD) for their bravery during an incident at the mall on December 6, 2025.

Officers responded to an assault in progress involving an erratic man, identified as Devan Barth, who was being held down by bystanders. Barth had been shouting racial slurs and assaulted a kiosk employee. When Barth attempted to attack the employee again, football coach Brett Hall intervened.

Hall, with help from his wife, Evann, managed to restrain Barth until police arrived. Barth was arrested for multiple counts of assault.

However, during the incident, a woman stole Brett’s recently purchased Christmas gifts. The theft was caught on video, and police are investigating. They urge anyone with information to contact them at 509-628-0333 or anonymously at www.kpdtips.com, referencing KPD 25-084898.

KPD acknowledged the courage it took for Brett and Evann to step in, although they do not encourage physical intervention. In recognition of their actions, KPD awarded them each a $100 gift card through the positive policing program.

The program, supported by HAPO Community Credit Union and the KPD Foundation, aims to promote community safety and reward acts of kindness. It also provides officers with opportunities to engage positively with the community.
