KENNEWICK, Wash. – The Kennewick City Council discussed proposed changes to waste management services aimed at reducing residential rates.
During the council’s July 22 workshop, representatives with Waste Management proposed reducing no-cost dump coupons from six to two, potentially saving residents about 41 cents per month.
Usage data showed most residents use two or fewer coupons annually, which prompted this suggestion.
A key proposal discussed was the introduction of a 96-gallon recycling cart, which would replace the current 18-gallon bins.
Another proposal involved eliminating the fall leaf program, which could lower monthly bills by 14 cents.
With year-round disposal options available, city planners argued that this would optimize resources. The transfer station will remain open for leaf disposal at no additional cost, they reassured.
The council also debated continuing waste services for the Toyota Center and Convention Center.
Keeping this service would increase proposed rates by 16 cents, leading to discussions on prioritizing venue support or overall resident savings.
Despite these proposed adjustments, Kennewick’s waste management rates would remain one of the lowest in Washington State.
