LAKE CITY, Fla. – A group of inmates at Columbia Correctional Institution is participating in a new initiative aimed at giving back to the community. The program involves crafting teddy bears for children in traumatic situations.
Jonathan Tucker, one of the 11 inmates involved, shared his thoughts on the project.
“Definitely a good opportunity because I get to make a change in other people’s lives,” said Tucker.
The process begins with tracing and cutting patterns, followed by sewing and stuffing the bears. Normally, inmates focus on producing uniforms, bedding and linens, but the new teddy bear program, led by Assistant Warden of Programs Krissy Stanford, seeks to expand their skills.
Stanford emphasized the program’s positive impact.
“But also through making a teddy bears is kind of broken down some walls and has opened up the communication where they’re talking more about their families and their kids and experiences that they’ve had and it’s just it’s been a wonderful program all the way around,” said Stanford.
The finished teddy bears are now placed inside Lake City Police Department patrol cars. Officers plan to distribute them to children during distressing situations.
Tucker expressed his motivation for participating in the program.
“That’s what motivates me because I’m putting smiles on other people faces and I’m giving the opportunity,” said Tucker.
The program not only provides inmates with valuable job skills but also fosters a sense of purpose and connection beyond prison walls.
