HANFORD, Wash. – The U.S. Department of Energy Hanford Field Office and the Washington State Department of Ecology are inviting the public to learn about a proposed waste processing facility at the Hanford Site.
The facility will be located in the Central Waste Complex in the 200 West Area and will process various types of waste, including contact-handled transuranic waste. Waste processed at the site will be shipped to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in New Mexico, or disposed of at Hanford, Hanford said in a release.
A virtual public meeting to discuss the project will be held on April 30 at 5:30 p.m. Community members can join via Microsoft Teams or by phone.
During the meeting, representatives from the Hanford Field Office will discuss the facility’s processing capabilities and its compliance with federal and state regulations. The Washington State Department of Ecology will explain the process of issuing a dangerous-waste permit for the facility, the release added.
While there is no public comment period at this meeting, a formal comment period will occur during the permit modification process, with additional opportunities for community input.
