RICHLAND, Wash. – The Department of Energy (DOE) Hanford Field Office will activate sirens between 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. tomorrow as part of an emergency drill.
DOE said that they regularly conduct these kinds of drills and siren tests at Hanford facilities in order to test equipment and train employees.
Sirens will be activated and may be heard near the Hanford Field Office 300 and 400 areas, 1 mile north of Richland and six miles northwest of Richland respectively.
DOE said that announcements made through the siren speakers will include “this is a drill message” before and after the siren tone.
“In a real emergency, county officials would activate the Emergency Alert System to broadcast information to the public via local radio and television stations,” DOE said in a press release. “Officials would also activate sirens located along the Columbia river, if necessary, to warn people on the water and on the shoreline.
