RICHLAND, Wash. – The Friends of Badger Mountain and Runners of the Sage are hosting a free kids run Wednesday, September 10 at 5:30 p.m. on Badger Mountain. The event, called “Best the Badger,” is a family-friendly run for children aged 10 and under.

Notable friend of Badger Mountain Carmine Hanks said, “It’s also an educational event to tell people a little bit more about Friends of Badger Mountain organization– Many people might not realize that all the trails here on the Badger Mountain, Candy Mountain and Little Badger Mountain preserves are maintained entirely by volunteers.”

Hanks emphasized the importance of educating families about the trail maintenance process.

“We know that families…can become members and that their membership donations go towards things like buying gravel or equipment to help clean keep the trails maintained,” she said.

The event also aims to inspire kids to engage in volunteer work and understand the significance of conservation.

“We want to talk to them a little bit about the important the special habitat we have out here,” said Hanks. “It’s really important for people to know that they need to stay on the trails and that includes keeping their dogs leashed.”

Attendees will learn about the shrub-steppe habitat and the importance of preserving the biocrust that helps retain moisture in the ground.

The event hopes to instill a sense of responsibility in young participants to keep the trails clean and preserve the wildlife and fauna in the surrounding areas and along the hike trail.
