PASCO, Wash. – A former NASA astronaut is in the Tri-Cities to inspire the next generation of star gazers.

Jose Hernandez was born into a family of migrant workers. Traveling up and down California following harvest seasons, Hernandez was unable to get consistent classroom time in his early adolescent years.

By the age of 11, he could just about speak English, but he already knew what he wanted to do with his life. Hernandez wanted to be an astronaut.

With the support of his father, Hernandez began his education for one of the hardest jobs there is.

Hernandez dedicated years to becoming an astronaut. Finally on his 12th try he was accepted by NASA in 2004 to Astronaut Candidate Training.

Hernandez is in town this week thanks to a partnership with the Blue Mountain Scouts. According to Terry Fleischman, Hernandez has been spending time at multiple schools in Pasco.

His message is a simple one: “make your goals lofty, but enjoy the journey.”
