E. coli cases linked to Yakima’s Mercado Los Amigos prompt health warning

YAKIMA, Wash. – The Yakima Health District (YHD) is investigating three cases of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) linked to Mercado Los Amigos. The individuals affected reported consuming meat, produce or prepared foods from the store.

Mercado Los Amigos, located at 1409 Fruitvale Boulevard, voluntarily closed on September 18. The store is cooperating with YHD to assess risks and ensure future food safety.

Health officials advised anyone who purchased or ate items from Mercado Los Amigos between September 10 and September 18 to watch for symptoms such as abdominal cramping, severe or bloody diarrhea or vomiting. People experiencing these symptoms should contact their healthcare providers.

While most recover from STEC in five to 10 days, children under five, adults over 65 and those with weakened immune systems face a risk of severe illness, including kidney failure.

The YHD explained that E. coli spreads through undercooked or raw beef, contaminated produce, cross-contamination in kitchens and person-to-person contact.

Melissa Sixberry, YHD Director of Disease Control, emphasized the importance of preventive measures.

“To stay safe from E. coli, it’s important to wash your hands regularly, follow food safety tips, and pay attention to symptoms such as diarrhea or stomach cramps. If you are experiencing symptoms, contact your healthcare provider. These simple actions go a long way in protecting your family,” Melissa Sixberry, YHD Director of Disease Control, stated.
