RICHLAND, Wash. – The Department of Energy is launching a new initiative called the Genesis Mission, aimed at revolutionizing scientific research using artificial intelligence. This national effort includes contributions from the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland.

The Genesis Mission is bringing together scientists and cutting-edge equipment from across the country to harness AI technology for scientific discovery. The initiative seeks to double the productivity of scientific spending in the United States within the next decade.

Court Corley, who has been working on AI projects since 2009, explained the significance of this initiative. “Industry has brought these incredible tools and getting to use things like you said, ChatGPT in our everyday lives,” Corley said. “Well, now it’s an opportunity to take that same type of technology, but apply it to the scientific discovery mission of the D.O.E..”

Corley noted the recent advancements in AI technology and how they are being integrated into scientific research. “And then, of course, in the last couple of years, I think once ChatGPT came out… It was like, oh, this is exciting,” Corley said.

The mission aims to leverage public-private partnerships to accelerate science. “So the number one goal is to double productivity of scientific spending in the United States within ten years that is really the, incredible opportunity in front of us, because we can take what industry is doing and through public private partnerships and really leverage our scientific data and facilities, to accelerate science,” Corley said.

The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is expected to be at the forefront of scientific development, with significant announcements anticipated in the coming years as part of this mission.
