RICHLAND, Wash. – The Richland Fire Department is planning controlled burns on the WSU Tri-Cities campus on Friday, May 23, as part of their Wildfire Training Academy.

The burns, which depend on weather conditions, will occur in vegetated areas next to the Wine Science Center at the intersection of Crimson Way and 1st Street. Fire crews will arrive at 8:00 a.m. to evaluate conditions, with burning scheduled between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

Residents are advised not to be alarmed by smoke in the area. This exercise is crucial in preparing crews for wildfire season, ensuring the community’s safety.

In an interesting twist, WSU-TC Wine Science students will collect smoke for research on its effects on wine grapes, linking academic pursuits with community safety efforts.
