RICHLAND, Wash. – The Energy Northwest Columbia Generating Station in Richland has been fined $4,000 by the Department of Ecology (Ecology) stemming from an oil spill that seeped into the Columbia River.

According to Ecology in a release, a cooling system seal failed on June 13, 2024, resulting in 282 gallons of lubricating oil being spilled, with 137 gallons recovered by a cleanup contractor but 145 gallons entering the river.

Ecology said the spill was not reported to the state’s Emergency Management Division until later that evening, which contributed to the penalty.

The Department of Ecology, which collaborates with businesses and individuals to ensure compliance with state laws, issues penalties when violations occur.
