BURBANK, Wash.- Bailey Newell is a first grade teacher at Columbia Burbank Elementary School. She was awarded February’s Classroom Makeover from WaFd Bank.
At Columbia Burbank Elementary, Mrs. Newell said she works to make class feel less like school by turning lessons into games and hands-on activities. “I try to make things feel more like a game, so they like school and they want to keep coming back,” she said. “I want it to be a safe place where they don’t feel like they’re just in a classroom.”
Newell was selected for this month’s Classroom Makeover and received $300 to enhance her space. She plans to use the funds on manipulatives, fidgets, cushions, and flexible seating to keep her 16 first graders comfortable and engaged.
After first coming to Burbank for a subbing position, Newell says she quickly fell in love with the close-knit community and the families she works with every day something she hopes her classroom reflects.
WaFd Bank believes in keeping our community strong through supporting students and teachers. Each month, WaFd and NonStop Local will choose a teacher from nominations by the community and present a check to their classroom. You can nominate a deserving teacher here.
