Building Blocks: A partnership empowering Richland students to thrive

RICHLAND, Wash.- Communities In Schools of Benton-Franklin (CISBF) and the Richland School District are proving what’s possible when schools and community organizations work together with one shared goal: removing barriers so students can succeed.

Assistant Superintendent of the Richland School District, Bryan Jones shared that while educators work tirelessly every day, many student challenges extend beyond the classroom.

“Communities In Schools plays a crucial role in supporting our schools,” Jones said. “Our educators do incredible work every day, but there are challenges like housing instability, food insecurity, mental-health needs, or family crises that extend beyond what a school can address alone.”

According to Jones, CISBF Student Support Coordinators are essential in identifying the root causes behind issues such as chronic absenteeism, academic struggles, or behavioral challenges. By building trusted relationships with students and families, they help connect them with the right resources at the right time.

“They truly bridge the gap between school, home, and community,” he said.

A Team Approach to Student Success

Amber Gonzalez emphasized that the success of this partnership is rooted in deep collaboration and integration within each school.

“Our Student Support Coordinators are woven into the fabric of their schools,” Gonzalez said. “They’re part of intervention teams, participate in case consultations, build strong community partnerships, and regularly connect with students and families through home visits and check-ins.”

This hands-on, connected approach allows CISBF to respond quickly when needs arise and address the whole child, not just academics.

“When schools and CISBF work hand-in-hand, students feel supported, seen, and empowered to succeed,” Gonzalez said.

This partnership highlights the powerful impact of community investment in education. By working together, CISBF and the Richland School District are ensuring students have access to the support systems they need to overcome obstacles and reach their full potential.
